The Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS) will host its fifteenth annual assembly at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario from Sunday, May 31 - Tuesday, June 2, 2020 (pre-conference Saturday, May 30, 2020) in conjunction with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Founded in 2005, CAFS promotes critical, multidisciplinary scholarship in the broad area of food systems, food culture, and food justice, including but not limited to: food policy, production, distribution, consumption, and waste. CAFS members are drawn from an array of disciplines across the sciences, humanities, and beyond. CAFS membership is open to academics, activists, students, policymakers, community workers, professionals, practitioners, and others interested in food studies research and practice. CAFS recognizes the need for transdisciplinary research on food issues both within and outside of academia in response to societal needs. The conference is an opportunity to share knowledge in a number of domain areas such as informing and critiquing policy, assessing and mobilizing the outcomes of community-based work, and demonstrating the health, social, economic, political, cultural, spiritual, and environmental impacts of food systems. CAFS 2020 will take place in the traditional territory of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak, and Attawandaron (Neutral) people, on lands connected with the London Township and Sombra Treaties of 1796 and with the Dish With One Spoon Convenant Wampum. In line with the theme of Congress 2020--Bridging Divides--the theme of the CAFS 2020 conference is: Everyone at the Table. Institutions of higher education in Canada have historically contributed to and benefited from prejudice and violence against black, Indigenous, and people of colour. Recent examples of racial profiling on campuses in Canada have punctuated the urgent need to address racism and colonialism in academia, as well as the need to end the dominance of white-settler perspectives in research and education. This year, CAFS equally seeks to challenge the systemic injustices of the industrial and alternative food systems that marginalize the food histories, practices, and experiences of Indigenous, African Canadian, and diverse communities. Exclusion from food system conversations and decision-making spaces means many are unable to access the food they need, diverse dietary needs and food cultures are marginalized, and sustainable and traditional food production practices are undermined and ignored. Last year, CAFS focused on Circles of Food, highlighting the diversity of perspectives, analysis, and stories of Canadian food systems. Everyone at the Table hopes to make connections between these diverse perspectives and to center historically marginalized voices, to work towards building a greater understanding of how to achieve food justice within Canada.
