Thinking seriously about cinema and related media means asking essential questions about culture, history, nationhood, identity, and technology. The Film Studies Association of Canada (FSAC) is a non-profit scholarly organization, founded in 1977, which seeks to foster and advance the study of the history and art of film and related fields in Canada and abroad. Our members are made up of professors, students, professionals, and non-specialists who employ a vast array of methodologies in their research and explorations of cinema and media: historical, theoretical, philosophical, and aesthetic. Since 1990, the organization has bi-annually published The Canadian Journal of Film Studies (CJFS), Canada’s leading academic peer-reviewed film journal. The FSAC annual conference provides a space for members to gather and share their research, test out ideas, discuss teaching practices and initiatives, catch up with old friends and network with new ones. Conference panels run every day of the event and are generally composed of a non-hierarchical mix of faculty, student, and professional speakers. Each conference bestows the Gerald Pratley Award on an outstanding graduate student who is undertaking innovative research in cinema studies that will contribute to the understanding of Canadian/Québec/Indigenous cinema both within this country and elsewhere. Similarly, each year an internationally recognized film scholar is invited to FSAC’s annual conference to provide a keynote address at the Martin Walsh Memorial Lecture. We welcome you to register for our conference and experience the future of Film Studies in Canada!
